ACADEMIC SENATE MEMBERS

SUBJECT:    Upcoming Faculty Lunch

The UCSD Libraries and the UCSD Academic Senate Library and Academic Personnel Committees are pleased to invite all faculty to the fourth in our lunch-time series:

Publish and/or Perish: Changes in Scholarly Communication

Our fourth lunch will focus on the role of big business in scholarly publishing. Are we losing control of what was once an academic enterprise.

Once again we will hear from an expert in the area. Ted Bergstrom, Aaron and Cherie Raznick Professor of Economic at the University of California, Santa Barbara will discuss the issue in a talk entitled:

"Some Economics of Scholarly Publishing: To Have and Be Had?"

Monday, April 17, 2006
12:00 - 1:30p.m.
UCSD Faculty Club Lounge

Professor Bergstrom moved to UC Santa Barbara from the University of Michigan eight years ago. His research interests include pure and applied microeconomics, public economics, and the interfaces between economics, anthropology, and evolutionary biology. He accidentally got interested in the economics of academic journals on the eve of the new millenium and and has published and spoken widely on what he refers to as the peculiar pricing of this industy. His web page to track journal pricing can be found at http://www.journalprices.com/.

Please join us on April 17. There is no cost for the lunch and seminar but an RSVP is requested to Jennifer Tom (jtom@ucsd.edu) by April 12, 2006. We look forward to seeing you!
