OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY

Our community continues to grieve the tragic death of Chancellor Denice Denton. Heartfelt condolences and remembrances of Denice have come in from across the country, and they testify to her achievements, her imagination, her courage, and her steadfast commitment to expanding opportunity for others. Denice touched the lives of many people, and many people are feeling the pain of her loss.

Since I first wrote you earlier this week, a memorial service has been scheduled to honor the life of Chancellor Denton. The service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Music Recital Hall on the Santa Cruz campus. In addition, a memorial fund has been established to honor Chancellor Denton's vision and priorities for UC Santa Cruz. More information about these activities can be found on a special web site paying tribute to Chancellor Denton at http://www.ucsc.edu/administration/denice_denton/. The web site includes comments from Denice's colleagues throughout American higher education and offers an opportunity to submit an online remembrance of your own. I encourage you to visit the site.

This is a particularly difficult time for many people on the Santa Cruz campus. I want to thank them for their perseverance, and I want them to know that the entire University of California community shares their grief and stands ready to assist in any way possible. The death of their chancellor and colleague is a loss for all of us in the UC family.

Sincerely,

Robert C. Dynes
President
