ACADEMIC SENATE: SAN DIEGO DIVISION

April 18, 2007

MEMBERS OF THE REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY

SUBJECT:    April 24, 2007 Meeting

Dear Colleagues:

Our fourth meeting of the 2006-07 academic year is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24th at 3:30 p.m., in the Center for Molecular Genetics Conference Room. The Notice of Meeting (agenda) and all pertinent documents may be found on the Senate's Web page at: http://www-senate.ucsd.edu/assembly/agenda/current.htm

This month's agenda contains numerous important items of business. We will have the great pleasure of acting on nominations for the 2006-07 Distinguished Teaching Awards, and we will finalize nominations for vacancies on the Committee on Committees. I direct your attention to page 11 of the agenda packet, which reflects the status of nominations to date. Nominations may also be made from the floor. Should you wish to nominate a colleague, please make sure that he or she is willing to serve if elected.

In addition, the Assembly will consider a report from the Graduate Council and hear updates from three Senate committees. The Committee on Educational Policy will report on matters relating to the academic integrity process, and the Committee on Library will report on a number of continuing matters of concern. Both are matters of importance to the Senate, and I hope and expect stimulating discussions of each.

I particularly draw your attention to the item of New Business, the Regent's Item RE-89. This proposed ban on accepting tobacco funding is controversial and has been the matter of long-standing debate within the Senate, at both the Divisional and systemwide levels. I urge you to carefully read the information provided and discuss this matter with your colleagues.

For help in reaching the website or to obtain a paper copy of the Notice of Meeting, please contact the Academic Senate Office at 858-534-3640. If at all times you prefer to receive a paper copy of the Notice of Meeting, let us know, and we will put you on our mailing list.

If you cannot attend next week's meeting, please be sure to notify your alternate to do so in your stead. This year's Assembly membership can be found at http://www-senate.ucsd.edu/assembly/membership/current.htm Your absence matters.

I look forward to seeing you on the 24th.

Sincerely,

Henry C. Powell
