SUBJECT:    PPM 230-15, Family Accommodations Policy

I am pleased to announce the revision of PPM 230-15, UCSD’s Family Accommodations Policy, effective immediately.

Following extensive campus and Academic Senate consultation, UCSD’s Family Accommodations Policy has been updated to include a flexible workload program for assistant ladder-rank faculty.

The University recognizes that for assistant ladder-rank faculty, the critical years for childbearing and childrearing often overlap with the crucial probationary years, in which it is necessary to develop a strong record for consideration for promotion to tenure.

Under the flexible workload program, an assistant ladder-rank faculty member with substantial parental responsibilities may be relieved of structured teaching and most service responsibilities for a specified period (not to exceed two years); appointees are not relieved of scholarly responsibility.

During the flexible workload period, the faculty member’s ladder-rank appointment is reduced to 50%. The appointee may choose to take a 50% parental leave, utilize earned sabbatical credits, supplement with extramural funds, or any combination of the three. To help the department meet its undergraduate teaching obligations, the full FTE salary savings will be returned to the department.

I believe it is a substantial addition to UCSD’s comprehensive family-friendly benefits. If you have any questions concerning this policy, please contact Kristina Petruzzelli, Director of Policy Development and Analysis, at extension 25248, or kpetruzzelli@ucsd.edu.
