SUBJECT:    Yesterday’s Announcement by President Bob Dynes

Yesterday, UC President and former UC San Diego Chancellor Bob Dynes announced his intention to step down from the UC presidency in June 2008.

As the UC San Diego leader who succeeded Bob and was recruited by him, I will always appreciate the opportunity he gave me to lead this extraordinary institution.

The University of California – and UC San Diego – have greatly benefited from Bob’s leadership over the last 17 years. During his tenure, Bob has helped the University of California remain the nation’s premier university during a period in which public higher education faced many challenges. He led the UC system in a challenging era that resulted in greater levels of transparency and heightened public accountability. He helped forge a compact with the Governor that has put the University on a solid financial footing. In addition, under his leadership, the University retained three National Laboratories, established strategic alliances with international innovation leaders, and launched a tenth campus, the University of California, Merced.

On a personal note, I am very grateful for the guidance, wisdom and friendship he has shared with me over the years. I will always appreciate his leadership and support of UC San Diego, as well as his many contributions to the University of California.
