SUBJECT:    John Muir College Provost

Susan Smith, Provost of John Muir College will be on a sabbatical leave, effective September 1, 2007, returning to her position as Provost in the winter quarter. I am delighted that Professor Stuart Brody of the Molecular Biology Section, Division of Biological Sciences, has agreed to serve as Acting Provost during Provost Smith's absence through the end of the fall quarter.

Professor Brody has been on the faculty of UCSD since 1967. He is a founding member of the John Muir College faculty, has been actively engaged in the activities of the college and has served on the executive committee. Dr. Brody is an outstanding teacher who consistently receives excellent instructor approval ratings. He has made valuable contributions to instruction at UCSD and has served as an advisor for undergraduate students, including senior honors thesis students. His service contributions to the department and the University are exceptional and numerous departmental and campus committees have benefited greatly from his experience and dedication to the educational mission of the University. He has served on and chaired a wide array of committees, including the Medical Sciences Training Program Admissions Committee; the Faculty Teaching Fellows Committee; and was the founder of the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Awards. He has also been the UCSD Coordinator of the joint Doctoral Program in Biology with San Diego State University.

Dr. Brody's commitment to undergraduate education and UCSD's college system make him exceptionally well qualified to provide leadership as Acting Provost of John Muir College for this four-month period. Please join me in thanking Professor Brody for assuming this important role and in wishing Provost Smith a rewarding and productive sabbatical.
