I am pleased to announce this year’s California Native American Day Celebration at UC San Diego. This is the second year UC San Diego is participating in the celebration and it is designed to promote events that enhance the relationship between the San Diego tribal communities and the UC San Diego community.
This year’s celebration includes:
*California Native American Day Kickoff on Sept. 28 at noon in the Sun God Lounge, Price Center. Louie Guassac, Executive Director of the Kumeyaay Border Task Force, will discuss “Family and Culture Through an Artificial Border.”
*Sandra Fox on Oct. 18 at 3:00 p.m. at the Cross-Cultural Center. Fox will discuss the needs of California tribes for access to higher education and the responsibilities of colleges and universities to provide an environment for Native American students.
*Natchee Blu Barnd on Oct. 19 at noon at the Cross-Cultural Center. Barnd will explore ways in which Native American people have been and are misrepresented in film, and how some filmmakers have attempted to combat these depictions.

In recognition of this annual event, I am approving one hour of administrative leave with pay which employees may apply toward their attendance at a California Native American Day Celebration activity. Supervisors are asked to allow employees one hour of administrative leave with pay to attend one or more of the planned celebratory events when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
At this time I would like to thank the members of the California Native American Day Celebration Planning Committee for their time and effort to coordinate these educational and celebratory campus events and activities.
Join me in honoring the heritage, culture, and traditions of our Native American tribes, and thank you for supporting California Native American Day at UC San Diego.
