OFFICE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR -
RESEARCH

October 24, 2008

ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    Appointment of Barbara F. Perry as Director of Government
Research Relations

Following an extensive national search, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara F. Perry as Director of Government Research Relations, effective November 1, 2008. Ms. Perry is currently serving as Associate Vice President and Director of Federal Relations at the University of Washington, a position she has held since 1997. Prior to that, Ms. Perry was Director of the University of California's Governmental Relations office in Washington, D.C.

Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research, Ms. Perry will oversee and manage a newly restructured government research relations program, assisting the campus with government, scientific, and institutional policy and program planning and development. She will develop and implement strategies to promote UCSD's ability to secure research funding, particularly from government sources. Ms. Perry will be responsible for elevating the visibility of UCSD's unique research capabilities through proactive government relations, issue management, and liaison with campus constituencies. She will advise on staff interactions with elected and appointed officials in Washington D.C., Sacramento, the greater San Diego region and elsewhere as appropriate to monitor and influence legislative and agency developments affecting the University.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. David Schroeder for his service to the campus during the search. David has worked in an effective and collaborative manner to carry out and ensure the continuity of UCSD's campus government relations agenda. He will continue to work with the Vice Chancellor for Research and Director Perry on behalf of UCSD's government research relations agenda at the state and federal levels.

Please join me in congratulating Barbara on her appointment to this important position for the campus.
