SUBJECT:    Associate Vice Chancellor Development Health Sciences

It is our pleasure to announce that effective November 3, 2008, Greg Barrett will begin his tenure as Associate Vice Chancellor Development for Health Sciences. Greg will serve as a core member of the Vice Chancellor for External Relations management team with a dotted reporting line to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine. In this role, Greg will provide Advancement leadership for the School of Medicine, the UCSD Medical Center enterprise which includes Hillcrest and Thornton Hospitals, the Moores Cancer Center, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Working with campus leadership, Greg will be instrumental in developing short- and long-term strategies for development priorities and ongoing fund-raising initiatives in Health Sciences.

Greg has over 10 years of progressively senior experience in Development. Most recently, as Associate Vice President at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where he was charged with the management and oversight of university-wide strategic planning for advancement; while concurrently maintaining a principal gift portfolio. From June 2004, to November 2007, Greg served as Associate Vice President at IIT, where he managed 5 teams: Alumni Relations, Annual Fund, Planned and Major Giving, Research, and Communications and Principal Gifts. During his tenure at IIT, overall fund raising and the total number donors engaged in the advancement process increased significantly.

Prior to IIT, Greg worked at the Children’s Memorial Foundation. He started at Children’s Memorial Foundation as Director of Major Gifts and later served as Director of Principal Gifts. During his tenure at Children’s Memorial Foundation, major gift fund raising increased more than 100% in a two-year period, with the total number of major donors increasing by over 50% during the same time period.

Greg is an excellent team player and collaborator with a proven track record of success. He has been highly praised for his skills in retaining and recruiting high-performing and committed team members. He is a strategic thinker and will be an excellent partner with the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Development to identify and implement mutual fund-raising goals for the campus.

Greg has a BA from James Madison University and a Master's Degree in English Literature from Indiana University.
