SUBJECT:    Correction: An Invitation the Kyoto Laureate Symposium

The annual Kyoto Laureate Symposium, introducing three of the most innovative thinkers of our time, will be held in San Diego March 13-14, 2008. Sponsored by UC San Diego, San Diego State University and the University of San Diego, the event gives our universities the distinction of hosting the only Kyoto Prize event outside Japan and demonstrates our city’s status as a rising global incubator for technology, science and culture.

On our campus, the Basic Sciences lecture will be presented by Laureate Hiroo Kanamori, Ph.D., a geophysicist currently associated with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in the Price Center Theatre.

Dr. Kanamori’s methods to quantify the earthquake rupture process have yielded epoch-making progress in understanding great earthquakes and tsunamis. He has proposed practical methods to acquire and analyze “real time” data to predict strong earthquake motions immediately before the arrival of seismic waves. In so doing, he has contributed to the establishment and operation of earthquake hazard mitigation systems with great potential to promote human welfare.

I will be joined in extending welcome remarks by Mark Thiemens, Dean of UC San Diego’s Division of Physical Sciences, and Tony Haymet, Vice Chancellor – Marine Sciences and Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

A reception in the Price Center Theatre lobby will follow the presentations.

The other Kyoto Laureate speakers this year are chemist Hiroo Inokuchi, Ph.D., who will make an advanced technology presentation at 9:30 a.m. on March 13 at Montezuma Hall at Aztec Center, San Diego State University, and choreographer Pina Bausch, who will present the arts and philosophy lecture at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, at Shiley Theatre, University of San Diego.

All events are free. I encourage you to register for our host event at http://www.kyotoprize.org or call 858 467-1727.
