ACADEMIC SENATE MEMBERS
I hope you will all join me in offering our congratulations to Henry C. (Harry) Powell, Professor of Pathology and immediate past Chair of the San Diego Division of the Academic Senate, who has been elected unanimously by the systemwide Academic Assembly as the 2008-09 Universitywide Senate Vice Chair and Chair Designate.
Harry is recognized as a distinguished world authority in experimental neuropathology, with emphasis on the peripheral neuropathies. He has trained numerous residents and fellows who have gone on to become directors of neuropathology at other high-level academic institutions. Beyond his achievements in research and mentoring, Harry has compiled an extraordinary record of dedicated Senate service.
Harry is well known for his integrity, his exceptional people skills, his deftness at consensus building, and his passionate commitment to the system of shared governance and to diversity. He is ideally suited to the role of Academic Senate leader in this challenging time for our University.
The last systemwide Senate Chair from our Division was the late Fred Spiess of SIO, who served with distinction 20 years ago. We can all take great pride in seeing one of our own rise to the top again.
