SUBJECT:    U.S. Open Golf Championship Parking Plans and Information

Transportation and Parking Services is planning to implement a number of measures to ensure the parking and transportation needs of the campus community are met during the U.S. Open Golf Championship June 9-15, 2008, at Torrey Pines Golf Course. As previously announced, some 50,000 spectators and volunteers are expected to attend the event daily, significantly impacting transportation and roads surrounding the campus. Peak hours for arriving traffic are 7:30 - 11:00 a.m.; peak exiting hours are 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Foremost among these traffic-easing measures is a free public transportation option available to UC San Diego students, staff and faculty June 9-13 through an arrangement with the Metropolitan Transit System and North County Transit District. Riders need only show a UC San Diego ID upon boarding a bus, the MTS Trolley, the NCTD Coaster or Sprinter service to ride free. For transit trip planning assistance, visit http://www.transit.511sd.com .

During the period of the U.S. Open, we plan to turn off all campus pay stations and will place parking staff in UCSD parking lots to guide our campus community and ensure the ability to park is limited to our campus faculty, staff and students. We ask that all campus parking patrons be prepared to present your UC San Diego-issued ID to these attendants when entering the university's parking lots.

In support of this community event, Transportation and Parking Services is working closely with U.S. Open officials to accommodate their parking needs. Although lots P704, P705 and P782 will be closed for campus use that week, UCSD permit holders in those lots will be able to park in other areas on campus without penalty. U.S. Open personnel also will staff the Northpoint Information booth to assist visitors.

We appreciate your support during this exciting week. A follow-up announcement with a map of affected areas will be issued closer to the event. Meanwhile, if you have questions please contact Charles Kindred at (858)534-6838 or cekindred@ucsd.edu and feel free to visit the UCSD U.S. Open website: http://usopen.ucsd.edu for periodic updates.
