SUBJECT:    Retirement of Tim Johnston, Assistant Dean, Office of
Graduate Studies - Student Affairs

After nearly 20 years of outstanding service to the University of California, San Diego, OGS Assistant Dean Tim Johnston is retiring effective June 27, 2008.

Tim joined UCSD Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach in 1989 as Assistant Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment and was promoted to Associate Director in 1994.

As a valued member of the Office of Graduate Studies since 2000, Tim has demonstrated a passion and dedication to diversity, outreach, and the recruitment, admission and retention of our graduate students. Tim has been tireless in advocating for the need to ensure that all who are qualified to benefit from graduate education and who can contribute to our research mission have full access to our campus and programs. He has also overseen numerous initiatives that have enhanced the quality of graduate student life at UCSD.

April Bjornsen, currently Director of Graduate Admissions at OGS, has generously agreed also to serve as Interim Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies until Tim's replacement can be hired. April may be reached at abjornsen@ucsd.edu.

Please join me in thanking Tim for his years of leadership and service, and in wishing him a long, healthy and happy retirement.
