SUBJECT:    Graduate Fellowships

Invent the Future, the UCSD campaign for student support, has recently been launched with a goal of raising $50 million. A key focus of the campaign is to raise funds for graduate fellowships, to aid in our long-held goal to increase the proportion of graduate students among our student body to 20%, and to compete more effectively for the best graduate students. With gratitude for all of your other contributions to graduate education, and mindful of the current budget crisis and furloughs, I know that most of you will not be in a position to make a significant personal gift to the campaign. However, I wanted to bring to your attention an alternative way in which you might help. If you are already contributing to United Way, it is possible to direct your contribution to our general Graduate Fellowship Fund. Of course, new contributions to this fund, in any amount, would also be most welcome. You can contribute at any time through http://unitedway.ucsd.edu/pledge/ or when the United Way campaign takes place next spring.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this, or if you have other ideas as to how faculty might contribute to the Invent the Future campaign.
