ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO
I am pleased to provide information about the newly appointed University of California Regent, Charlene Zettel, a prominent political and community leader from Encinitas. Appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Regent Zettel will serve a 12-year term that expires March 1, 2021.
We’ve been fortunate that since the announcement earlier this month, Regent Zettel has joined us for the opening of our new Conrad Prebys Music Center and has traveled to the South Bay for “An Evening with UC San Diego,” a high school outreach event that highlights the importance of higher education. In the near future, Regent Zettel will visit the campus for a tour and to learn more about our education, research, community and service programs.
Regent Zettel has an impressive background as an elected official representing Poway. In 1992, she won a seat on the Poway Unified School District Board. She served in the California State Assembly from 1999 until 2003. She was appointed Chairwoman of the Republican Caucus during her first term in the Assembly; vice chair of the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy; and a member of the Appropriations, Education, Health, Rules, Transportation and Governmental Organization committees. During her tenure, she led legislative efforts to protect senior citizens and children from abuse, working with law enforcement and citizen advocates. “Oliver’s Law,” which provides parents with critical information about licensed day care providers, was a major achievement in her efforts to provide consumers with essential background and to enhance public safety. She has also been a candidate for the State Senate.
Regent Zettel is known as a consensus builder who enjoys bringing people together to find solutions for complicated problems. Governor Schwarzenegger appointed her as the Director of the Department of Consumer Affairs in 2004 and to the San Diego Regional Airport Authority in 2007. In addition to state service, Regent Zettel has been a public interest director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco. She currently is a member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter of the Red Cross.
Among her many accomplishments, Regent Zettel has been awarded San Diego BIOCOM’s “2000 Legislator of the year,” the California School Boards’ “1999 Outstanding Freshman Legislator,” and Crime Victims United “2001 Legislator of the Year.” Originally from East Los Angeles, Regent Zettel attended Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Canada-Flintridge. She earned a Bachelors of Science degree in dental hygiene from the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry. She and her husband, David, have been married 39 years and have two adult sons.
We look forward to Regent Zettel’s visits to UC San Diego and appreciate that San Diego County is represented on the UC Board of Regents.
