CAMPUS NOTICE

ACADEMIC SENATE: SAN DIEGO DIVISION

September 1, 2009

MEMBERS, ACADEMIC SENATE SAN DIEGO DIVISION

SUBJECT:    Message from 2008-09 Senate Chair Donoghue

Dear Colleagues,

It has been my great pleasure and honor to serve UC San Diego as Chair of the Academic Senate during this past year.

Today, I take this opportunity to officially welcome our new Senate Chair, Professor William Hodgkiss, and our new Vice-Chair, Professor Frank Powell, under whose leadership our campus will be well served during the coming year.

This past year has been challenging for UC San Diego as we have endeavored to preserve the high quality of our research and educational missions even under the extraordinary budgetary pressures imposed by the state's fiscal crisis.

The high level of involvement in shared governance by so many of you was instrumental in persuading President Yudof and the Office of the President to allow a more flexible furlough policy than originally proposed.

In addition, the involvement and hard work of so many of you on an array of other important issues has contributed enormously to enhancing the excellence of UC San Diego.

In light of the continuing budgetary problems confronting California, I would ask that you maintain a high level of engagement and participation in shared governance as we collectively seek long-term solutions that will allow UC San Diego to retain its vibrancy and truly outstanding trajectory in the future.

Thank you,

Daniel J. Donoghue, 2008-09
