SUBJECT:    Assistant Vice Chancellor – Program Planning and Undergraduate Education

After 36 years of outstanding service to the University of California, San Diego, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Program Planning and Undergraduate Education Bonnie Horstmann has announced her decision to retire, effective October 5, 2009. She will be greatly missed as a friend, colleague and mentor by many across the campus.

Bonnie’s career at UC San Diego began in 1973 in the Department of Physics, where she remained for nearly 21 years in positions ranging from Administrative Assistant I to Manager of Graduate and Undergraduate Student Affairs. She served as Director of the Academic Senate Office from 1994 to 1998 before joining the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, initially as Director of Program Planning. In 2003/04 Bonnie served as Special Assistant to the Chancellor (50%) in support of then Acting Chancellor Marsha A. Chandler.

Her tenure with the Office of the SVCAA has coincided with tremendous growth on the UC San Diego campus. She has provided distinguished, unequivocal support of undergraduate education. Bonnie has been instrumental in the planning efforts for numerous campus initiatives, notably, the establishment of Sixth College, the Rady School of Management, the International Studies initiative (including the International Studies major and the Institute for International, Comparative and Area Studies) and the reorganization of the Department of Biology as the Division of Biological Sciences. She has served as a staff consultant to or as a member of countless Search Committees, Senate-Administration Task Forces and Work Groups, and as such has worked to ensure collegial and effective collaboration between the Academic Senate and the Administration in these and many other undertakings. Bonnie is well-respected by her faculty and staff colleagues across the campus and systemwide. Her dedication, good judgment, interpersonal skills and tact have made her a person that we all depend on for sage advice, and to handle the most sensitive and complex issues. She is an extraordinary campus citizen.

A celebration will be held in Assistant Vice Chancellor Horstmann’s honor on Friday, October 2, 2009 from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. at the Faculty Club, Atkinson Pavilion. Please join me in wishing Bonnie well and in offering heartfelt thanks for her exemplary service to UC San Diego. Please RSVP to SVCAA@ucsd.edu or 858-534-3130.
