SUBJECT:    Community Advisory Bulletin

UCSD Police would like you to be aware of the following reduction/elimination of City of San Diego Lifeguard Services at Torrey Pines City Beach (Black's Beach) effective January 1, 2010.

On December 30, 2009, the City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department issued the following bulletin:

“New Year Brings Change to Lifeguard Service at Black’s Beach - Budget Reductions Mean an End to Fall and Winter Lifeguard Patrols.

Beginning January 1, 2010 the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, Lifeguard Division will implement changes to Lifeguard operations at Torrey Pines City Beach (Black’s Beach). This comes as a result of budget reductions proposed by Mayor Jerry Sanders and approved by the San Diego City Council on December 14.

Following Labor Day and continuing through May, there will be no lifeguard staffing at Torrey Pines City Beach (Black’s Beach).

From June through Labor Day, there will be two lifeguards assigned to patrol Torrey Pines City Beach (Black’s Beach) daily.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department has worked closely with the State of California Lifeguards to develop a response plan for emergencies that may arise in this area, such as medical aids and water rescues.

Emergencies should always be reported by dialing 9-1-1.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, Lifeguard Division continues to encourage the public to always swim near a lifeguard. The closest City beach with year-round lifeguard protection is La Jolla Shores.”

Beach safety information can be found at the City of San Diego site below:
