SUBJECT:    Appointments to Key Administrative Positions in the
Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Ann Briggs Addo as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Asst. VC-AA), effective October 6, 2010. In her role as Asst. VC-AA, Ms. Briggs Addo will serve as a key advisor to me on a wide range of Academic Affairs and campus-wide issues and will be responsible for developing and leading the implementation of new programs and initiatives to meet the changing needs of Academic Affairs. She will serve as a liaison with campus leaders, UC Office of the President, other UC Campuses, and external constituents on my behalf and will provide support for my efforts in Development, Community Outreach and External Relations. In addition, she will continue to support the SVCAA office in relations with the Preuss School.

Ms. Briggs Addo first joined the University of California in 1992 and served at the San Diego campus until 2008 in a number of roles, including Capital Planning's Business Manager, Interim Associate Chancellor, and Assistant Vice Chancellor/Chief of Staff-Resource Management & Planning. In 2008 she was recruited to the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff for Health Affairs at the UC Irvine campus. In that role Ms. Briggs Addo provided leadership, project management, and analytical support to the health sciences administration on various strategic initiatives and on myriad diverse campus issues and programs that include long range planning, resource planning/management strategy, institutional conflicts of interest, and health affairs operations. She returned to UC San Diego in June 2010 as Director of Undergraduate Education and Program Planning for Academic Affairs. As a member of the SVCAA leadership team she has worked with colleagues within Academic Affairs and across the campus on areas relating to undergraduate education operations, policy, and programs, and has also worked on a variety of special initiatives.

Ms. Briggs Addo is a LEAD San Diego graduate, and holds a B.S. in business administration from Indiana University and an Executive MBA from San Diego State University. She is a member of the American Management Association.

I am also pleased to announce that Kathleen D. Johnson has been appointed to the position vacated by Ms. Briggs Addo as Director of Undergraduate Education and Program Planning, effective November 1, 2010. In her new role, Ms. Johnson will report to and function as Chief of Staff for Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education (AVCUE) Barbara Sawrey, and will serve as a member of the SVCAA office's senior team. She will work with the AVCUE in the ongoing strategic planning process for academic programs and initiatives.

Ms. Johnson brings to the position 26 years of professional experience, serving for the last eight years as Management Services Officer for UC San Diego's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She is the creator of and instructor for the Staff Education and Development class "Communication Tool Belt," and serves on numerous campus committees. She recently chaired the Business Officer Academy (BOA) Program Evaluation Review Committee (PERC). Prior to joining UC San Diego, Ms. Johnson served as Director of Budget and Administration for the University of San Diego School of Law. She began her career as a financial analyst for General Dynamics Space Systems Division in San Diego. Ms. Johnson has a B.S. Business Administration from UC Berkeley and an MBA from the University of San Diego.

Please join me in congratulating Ms. Briggs Addo and Ms. Johnson on their new positions. Their combined institutional knowledge and experience within the University of California will serve my leadership team and the campus community well.
