ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    World AIDS Day 2010 on December 1

UC San Diego will honor World AIDS Day on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 as a special day to focus attention on the impact that HIV/AIDS has had in the San Diego community, the nation and the world.

UC San Diego will display three sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in the Price Center East Ballroom from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Concurrently, there will be Quilt sections presented at the lobby of the UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, and the lobby of the UC San Diego Thornton Hospital in La Jolla. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a poignant memorial, a powerful tool for use in preventing new HIV infections, and the largest ongoing community arts project in the world. On display will be sections of the Quilt that have emerged from San Diego organizations and individuals as San Diegans have responded to the AIDS crisis, both in the early years of the epidemic and through present day. UC San Diego will sponsor a number of other events in recognition of World AIDS Day including a series of performances at the Quilt itself, including the UC San Diego Gospel Choir, as well as a photography exhibit of long term survivors with HIV/AIDS, and red ribbon distribution throughout campus.

In recognition of this event, I am approving one hour of administrative leave with pay that employees may apply to their attendance at a World AIDS Day event. Supervisors may allow one hour of administrative leave with pay for staff to participate during World AIDS Day, as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.

World AIDS Day events are co-sponsored by a number of organizations and departments at UC San Diego, including the LGBT Resource Center, the Student Health Service, Student Health Advocates, Associated Students (AS), the LGBT Staff & Faculty Association, the AIDS Research Institute, the Visual Arts Department, the department of Theatre and Dance, the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center (HNRC), the Anti Viral Research Center (AVRC), the Arusha Project, the Owen Clinic, Health and Safety, University Centers, Face AIDS, Housing*Dining*Hospitality, Counseling and Psychological Services, the UC San Diego Bookstore, Equal Opportunity/Staff Affirmative Action, the UCSD Libraries, the Women's Center, the Cross-Cultural Center and many committed individuals throughout the University community.
