CAMPUS NOTICE

ACADEMIC SENATE: SAN DIEGO DIVISION

November 19, 2010

MEMBERS, SAN DIEGO DIVISION, ACADEMIC SENATE
MEMBERS OF THE REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY

SUBJECT:    November 30, 2010 Meeting

Dear Colleagues: Our second meeting of the 2010 - 2011 academic year is scheduled for Tuesday, November 30 at 3:30 p.m., in the Leichtag Building Conference Room.

The Notice of Meeting (agenda) and all pertinent documents may be found on the Senate's Web page at:
http://senate.ucsd.edu/assembly/agenda/current.htm

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS: Professor Steven Adler, Chair of the Council of Provosts, will give the Assembly an update on UC San Diego's six undergraduate colleges.

Under regular business, the Graduate Council has submitted proposals for new Ph.D. degrees in several graduate programs, as well as new self-supporting Master of Advanced Studies degrees in various departments in the Jacobs School of Engineering.

UC's response to the continuing budget crisis is of importance to many, and at our October 26 meeting Academic Council Chair Simmons urged Council to take a leading and active part in the discussion over a strategic plan for UC's future. In September, Academic Council Chair Simmons circulated recommendations from the Academic Council to the UC Commission on the Future and the UCLA Statement of Academic Senate Values and Recommendations to systemwide Senate Committees and Divisions for review and comment. These statements, as well as the Senate Council's response to them, will be discussed at the November 30 meeting. The recommendations include the increasing of revenues, possibly through an increase in fees, the downsizing of faculty and staff, a moratorium on capital building projects, and the limiting of new academic programs unless funding sources are first identified. All are of vital importance and will have profound impact on the University's mission, and I urge you to actively participate in this discussion.

For help in reaching the Web site or to obtain a paper copy of the Notice of Meeting, please contact the Academic Senate Office at 858-534-3640. If at all times you prefer to receive a paper copy of the Notice of Meeting, let us know, and we'll put you on our mailing list.

If you cannot attend next week's meeting, please be sure to notify your alternate to do so in your stead. Your participation matters.

I look forward to seeing you on the 30th.

Sincerely,

Frank L. Powell, Chair
Academic Senate, San Diego Division
