SUBJECT:    Appointment of Vice Chancellor for Research

We are delighted to announce the appointment Dr. Sandra A. Brown as our new Vice Chancellor for Research, effective December 8, 2010. A member of the UC San Diego faculty since 1984, Dr. Brown is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and holds an additional In Residence Professor appointment in the Department of Psychiatry. She currently serves as Chief of Psychology Services at the VA San Diego Health Services System, where she has directed the development of clinical, education, and research activities for 17 years.

Dr. Brown received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Wayne State University. She is a stellar scholar in the area of alcohol and drug abuse across the life span. She has earned national and international recognition for her research and is regarded as a leading expert in her field, as is reflected in her outstanding rate of publication in refereed journals, her impressive and prolonged success in procuring extramural funding, and her high citation rate. In addition to exemplary service on important university committees, she has held numerous national leadership positions related to etiology, prevention and treatment of alcohol and other substance problems. Her international efforts have focused on bringing science to the understanding and treatment of addictive disorders. In addition to her distinguished academic background, Dr. Brown will bring to her new role broad experience in academic leadership and a demonstrated commitment to equity and diversity.

As Vice Chancellor for Research, Dr. Brown will have responsibility for fostering the continued research preeminence of UC San Diego, with oversight of the University’s extensive research enterprise, including Research Administration, Intellectual Property Management, Contract and Grant Administration, and Federal and State Research Relations. She will develop the infrastructure and policy to further enhance research on the campus, foster interactions with federal, state, and private agencies and with industry to promote campus research programs and create new opportunities for enhancing research activities and research funding on campus. She will be responsible for promoting research ethics and for the oversight of compliance with federal and state guidelines for research. Dr. Brown will also work to advance a variety of research partnerships, including initiatives with the international community, which will enhance UC San Diego's global competitiveness as a preferred partner in research and education.
