KEY ADMINISTRATORS / KEY SUPPORT STAFF

SUBJECT:    Elazar Harel, Assistant Vice Chancellor – ACT

Elazar Harel, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Administrative Computing and Telecommunications (AVC-ACT), has accepted the position of Vice Chancellor – Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at UC San Francisco, overseeing both the academic and administrative information technology activities of the campus. His last day at UC San Diego will be Friday, April 9. Emily Deere, the Executive Director of the IT Applications Group will serve as Acting Assistant Vice Chancellor for ACT while a search is conducted for Elazar’s successor.

Elazar has provided exceptional IT leadership for UC San Diego since coming to our campus from UCLA in 1996, making this campus the envy of the UC system and other universities across the nation. His career highlights are numerous, including leading the campus Next Generation Network, the establishment of an integrated set of Web-based administrative systems delivered through Blink and TritonLink (which was recognized with the Larry Sautter award in 2006), Single Sign-On, and other Link family and MyServices products, just to name a few. More recently, he was responsible for launching innovative applications, such as Marketplace, UC San Diego iPhone, and Academic Personnel Online, which have been very well-received. He continues to be a real innovator, recognized nationally for such accomplishments as the annual Sharecase event, and creating the disaster recovery partnership with the Office of the President. He has been active in numerous higher education technology organizations including EDUCAUSE, the Microsoft Higher Education Advisory Council, the Sun Microsystems Academic Advisory Council, and the CENIC Board of Directors.

We are extremely grateful for all Elazar has done to move this campus to the forefront of technology. We will miss him greatly as a colleague and friend, but this is an exceptional career opportunity and we wish him all the best in his new position. Fortunately, he remains within the UC system and therefore, we will all continue to benefit from his leadership in many important ways.

Please join me in congratulating Elazar on his new position.
