SUBJECT:    Interim Director - Environment, Health & Safety

I am pleased to announce that Garry Macpherson has agreed to serve as the Interim Director for Environment, Health & Safety while we search for a replacement to fill the vacancy created by Steve Benedict who recently accepted a position with the University of Michigan. We thank Steve for his hard work and dedicated efforts in promoting a safe, healthy environment for all faculty, students and staff at UCSD and wish him the best of success in his future endeavors.

Garry has an exemplary track record of professional accomplishments and in his role as the Director of Fire and Life Safety has been serving as a member of the EH&S Director's Executive Management Team. As such he was responsible for new construction design, plan reviews, and inspection staff activities as well as serving as liaison to General Safety, Risk Management, Chemical Safety, Lab Safety, Radiation Safety, and Hazardous Waste personnel. Prior to coming to UCSD he served as the Fire Division Chief for the City of Poway's Department of Safety Services, responsible for all Fire Marshal's and Deputy Fire Marshal's activities, drafting and adoption of the Uniform Fire Code, cooperative law enforcement and emergency response duties, and Fire and Life Safety Plan review and construction inspections. Gary has a wealth of management and supervisor experience that will further enhance his ability to direct and manage the organization.

As a recognized consultant in current and proposed emergency response systems I know that he's well prepared to steer the ship for the next few months while a national search is underway for a new Director. In consultation with Faculty leaders directly involved with several of our comprehensive safety committees we will develop appropriate outreach plans and launch an extensive search in the near future.
