It is our pleasure to announce that Patrick Carew has been selected as the new Associate Vice Chancellor - Health Sciences Development (AVC-HSD) effective August 1, 2010. In this capacity, Pat will serve as a core member of my management team and Vice Chancellor Brenner's management team. As AVC-HSD, Pat will provide advancement leadership for the School of Medicine, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the UC San Diego Health System which includes Hillcrest and Thornton Hospitals and the Moores Cancer Center. Working with Health Sciences leadership, Pat will be instrumental in developing short- and long-term strategies to address development priorities and creating ongoing fund-raising initiatives to support Health Sciences.
Pat has over twenty years of related experience, along with a proven track record of progressive leadership and management in diverse healthcare, hospital, and university settings. He has also been a consistent top performer and fundraiser in these organizations. Most recently, as Executive Director of Development Health Affairs Advancement at UC Irvine, he was charged with advising and presenting targeted solutions to Health Sciences senior leadership on broad fundraising issues including long range planning, priority setting, establishing financial targets, and managing program implementation. During his tenure, he has created innovative programs aimed at identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high capacity, high interest prospects and donors. He has been effective in conceptualizing, developing, and implementing strategic special events, annual campaigns, alumni programs and symposia. His responsibility also included oversight of six volunteer advisory councils/Boards.
Before joining UC Irvine in January 2000, Pat served as Senior Vice President & Deputy Executive Vice President for the American Heart Association where he led and managed 100 business, operations, financial, administrative and fundraising staff in three offices and provided oversight to a 32 member Board of Directors. Pat has an MBA from Pepperdine University and a BA from San Diego State University.
Pat is described as an excellent collaborator with demonstrated success at promoting cross-functional relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including university leadership, clinicians, researchers, staff, donors, foundation, corporate and community leaders, elected officials and dignitaries. As such, he will serve as an excellent partner with the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Development in identifying and achieving mutual fund-raising goals for the campus.
