SUBJECT:    Elimination of UC San Diego Libraries’ On-campus
Paging and Delivery Service, “Roger Catalog Request”

Effective September 17, 2010, the UC San Diego Libraries will eliminate their on-campus paging and delivery service, “Roger Catalog Request.”

The Libraries’ decision to eliminate the on-campus paging and delivery of materials is a consequence of budget cuts in fiscal years 2008–09 and 2009–10 totaling nearly $4 million, or approximately 15% of our operations and collections budget; $1 million assessment for employee furloughs; and in anticipation of further significant budget cuts in 2010–11.

For the time being, the Libraries will continue paging and delivering materials from and to our off-campus/remote locations – MCL, the Scripps Library, and the Libraries’ storage annex.

Please note that the elimination of on-campus paging and delivery will not affect, again for now, other services such as Circuit or Interlibrary Loan (including Melvyl “UC Request”).

We are aware that on-campus library paging and delivery are a valued convenience for UCSD faculty, students, and staff, and we do not take their elimination lightly. Regrettably, repeated and continuing reductions of the Libraries budget leave us few alternatives.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
