SUBJECT: Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars 2011

I invite you to join me in supporting undergraduate scholarships at the 16th annual Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars on Friday, October 21.

This yearly event has raised $2.5 million for scholarships since it was established in 1996, and has helped 850 ambitious and motivated students. With State budget cuts to the UC and increasing need for financial aid, it’s more important than ever for the campus to come together to support student scholarships.

The Chancellor’s Challenge 5K will start at 12:15 p.m. on the North Campus Field, adjacent to RIMAC, and will continue on a scenic course through campus. Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. Participants may run or walk the course, and will receive a 5K T-shirt and lunch following the race.

In the spirit of broad campus involvement, I am approving two hours of administrative leave with pay on the day of the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars. Supervisors may allow two hours of release time for staff to participate as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
