OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR – ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

May 4, 2011

ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    Establishment of Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Conclusion of Dr. Sandra Daley’s 3-Year Term as Chief Diversity Officer

Following campus and community consultation, we are pleased to announce plans to establish the position of Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and to conduct a national search for an experienced leader to guide our diversity initiatives. The full-time vice chancellor position will have direct responsibility for a range of diversity offices and activities for faculty, staff and students.

The shift to a full-time diversity leader comes as Dr. Sandra Daley, who has served as Associate Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) in addition to her half-time position as Professor of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine, concludes a three-year term as CDO on June 30, 2011.

Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs and with an indirect reporting relationship to the Chancellor, the VC EDI will be supported by an Advisory Council representing campus constituencies and will be responsible for building on existing diversity plans to develop and implement a campus-wide strategy on equity, diversity and inclusion. The strategic plan will inform the final organizational structure for the office of the VC EDI, will propose metrics to gauge progress, and will identify potential additional areas of responsibility.

The VC EDI will be a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, continuing the practice of the Chief Diversity Officer as an integral advisor to the campus leadership. During the transition, Dr. Daley will serve as an advisor to the Executive Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs.

Our decision to establish the VC EDI position within Academic Affairs will ensure greater collaboration among faculty, staff, and student diversity offices, programs and initiatives, and reflects the most financially viable and cost-effective organizational structure.

In the coming weeks, the Executive Vice Chancellor will establish a Search Committee which will work with a national search consultant and the EVC to consult broadly in developing the VC EDI position description and detailing the qualities necessary for the successful candidate. An initial VC EDI office structure may be found on the Diversity Matters website (http://diversity.ucsd.edu/index.html) and the Campus Climate website (http://campusclimate.ucsd.edu/). A national search will get underway later in the spring quarter. Initial transition of units within the Chancellor’s Diversity Office will begin July 1, 2011.

We encourage your nomination of potential candidates for VC EDI to EVC@ucsd.edu, and we express our sincere thanks to Dr. Daley for advancing diversity at UC San Diego and positioning our campus for continued progress toward our diversity goals.
