SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT Update - SIO Marine Ecosystem Sensing, Observation and Modeling (MESOM) Laboratory

Project Description/Location:

The Marine Ecosystem Sensing, Observation and Modeling (MESOM) Laboratory on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus, is a new 3 story, 41,000 GSF building that will start construction on August 15, 2011. This new building will take the place of Parking Lots P012 and P013 adjacent to Isaacs Hall along Biological Grade Drive. Completion of the project is scheduled for October 16, 2012. In conjunction with the grading and construction work required for this building, renovation of the Isaacs Hall South Service Yard will take place from August 15, 2011 to December 27, 2011. The construction work around Isaacs Hall includes the demolition of existing trailers, vegetation and relocation of scientific and electrical equipment. The construction of a new trash enclosure adjacent to Parking Lot P011 is also part of the project but has not been scheduled to date.

Immediate Street Impacts

There will be periodic closures of Biological Grade during grading operations due to soil removals and the closure of Biological Grade at La Jolla Shores Drive from January 30, 2012 - April 3, 2012 for renovation of the intersection, and the installation of new sidewalks. Deliveries of materials will also affect the use of Biological Grade periodically. Detours and signage will be provided directing both vehicles and pedestrians around the impacted area. Flagmen will also be present to direct traffic. Signage illustrating alternate paths of pedestrian travel will be provided. Updates will continue to be provided throughout the construction period.
