SUBJECT:    Reappointment of Kim Barrett as Dean of Graduate Studies

I am pleased to announce that, subsequent to a successful five-year review, I have reappointed Kim Barrett as Dean of Graduate Studies for an additional five-year term. Dean Barrett has provided outstanding leadership to the campus in her capacity as Dean of Graduate Studies, having made significant contributions to promoting the highest standards of excellence in graduate education at UC San Diego. Under her leadership, campus participation in the National Research Council’s (NCR) study of graduate programs has increased resulting in a rate of participation in all the groups selected for review by NCR that exceeded the national averages in all categories. She has also worked closely with the Graduate Council to devise a new methodology for the allocation of Block Grant funding to departments. The new methodology for the allocation of block grants maintains the long held campus principle that a slightly higher level of funding per capita should be allocated to disciplines with limited or no opportunities to obtain extramural support. In addition, Dean Barrett has played an integral role in the Invent the Future: Student Support Campaign which raises essential funds to advance our effort to grow UC San Diego’s graduate student population.

I am delighted that the campus will continue to benefit from Dean Barrett’s outstanding leadership. I appreciate the review committee’s thorough work, as well as the members’ insightful suggestions for continuing to move the Office of Graduate Studies forward.

Please join me in thanking Dean Barrett for her many contributions to the campus, both past and future.
