ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    Appointment of Associate Vice Chancellor - Academic Personnel and Resources (Part-Time Administrative)

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Professor William S. Hodgkiss to the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel and Resources (AVC-AP&R), effective October 1, 2011. As AVC-AP&R Professor Hodgkiss will serve as a member of my senior leadership team and provide advice on academic personnel matters including the academic personnel appointment and promotion review process. He will also have responsibility for planning and overseeing the implementation of new campus academic programs, policies, and initiatives, and providing leadership in the planning of resources to meet programmatic and capital program goals, developing the State Capital Improvement Plan, and overseeing the use of technology-enhanced instruction.

Since 1978 Professor Hodgkiss has been a distinguished member of the UC San Diego faculty at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and on the staff of the Marine Physical Laboratory, where he is currently Deputy Director. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and as Associate Director for the UC San Diego Division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). He has a wealth of campus service and administrative experience, having served as Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs and Associate Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences from 1998 to 2002 and as Vice-Chair then Chair of the San Diego Division of the Academic Senate from 2008-2010. Professor Hodgkiss received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in 1975. His present research interests are in the areas of signal processing, communications, wireless sensor networks, propagation modeling, ambient noise, and environmental inversions, with applications of these to underwater acoustics and electromagnetic wave propagation. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.

Professor Hodgkiss' academic accomplishments, breadth of campus experience, values, energy and strong leadership experience make him exceptionally well suited to advise and support me in my leadership of Academic Affairs. Please join me in congratulating Professor Hodgkiss on his appointment. Please also join me in thanking Professor Emeritus David R. Miller for his extraordinary service to the campus as Interim AVC. He will continue to serve in this capacity through September.
