Subject:    Discontinuance of Public Student Directories

In response to student request and on the recommendation of the campus Student Messaging Governance Team, UC San Diego will discontinue the online directory of student information effective for Fall 2011.

Student safety and identity protection are very important to the University, and the online directory of student information has become more of a concern about privacy in recent years. The University is permitted by law and University policy to provide directory information without students' consent, but to protect student information and identity, UC San Diego will not continue to do so. Currently, students have the option to restrict or opt-out of the online directory. Although the online directory is being discontinued, students may continue to restrict directory information, via the Address Tool on Triton Link, if they do not wish directory information to be released through other venues. Legitimate faculty and staff use of directory information will still be permitted via "Blink" which is a search tool behind Single Sign On (SSO).

Student safety continues to be a top priority, and removing the online student directory is another way we can help in guarding the information and identity of students at UC San Diego. The printed faculty, staff, and student directory will be published in the Fall due to contractual requirements but will include only student name and UCSD email address in this edition.

Questions concerning this action can be directed to Registrar William Haid, whaid@ucsd.edu or 858 534-5448.
