SUBJECT:    Appointment of Interim Dean and Search for the Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering

Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering, Frieder Seible, has announced his decision to step down as Dean January 1, 2013, following his sabbatical leave. Dr. Seible will retire from UC San Diego on April 1, 2013 after 30 years of exemplary service.

We are pleased that Professor Juan C. Lasheras who is presently serving as Acting Dean, has agreed to serve as Interim Dean until a new permanent Dean is identified. He is the Stanford S. and Beverly P. Penner Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the Jacobs School, an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, a distinguished professor in the departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Bioengineering, a dedicated and celebrated teacher, the Founding Director of the Center for Medical Device and Instrumentation at the Institute of Engineering in Medicine, and a Co-Director of the Master of Advanced Study program in Medical Device Engineering. Professor Lasheras served as Chairman of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from 1999-2004 and led the department's faculty hiring and growth in the fields of medical and biological applications, environmental engineering, and nanomaterials. Professor Lasheras works at the intersection of biology, medicine and engineering and is a world-leading expert in fluid mechanics, turbulent flows, two-phase flows and on the mechanics of cell migration and invasion.

An international search for the new Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering will commence in January, and we are pleased to invite applications and nominations for this position.

The Jacobs School of Engineering is a top-ranked engineering school with 197 faculty, 1,548 graduate students, 5,638 undergraduate students, and 300 staff members. Annual research expenditures in the Jacobs School totaled $163.6 million in Fiscal Year 2012. The Dean, reporting directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, is the academic-administrative leader of the Jacobs School of Engineering, comprised of six academic departments - Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, NanoEngineering, and Structural Engineering - each with a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs and research facilities.

The Dean works closely with the other divisional deans and the Vice Chancellor for Research to oversee a large number of organized research units, including the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, the Center for Energy Research, the Center for Networked Systems and others, many of which are listed at:

In addition, the Dean oversees a collection of signature academic, entrepreneurial, team-based, service, outreach and retention programs for students -- programs that collectively make up the Jacobs School's engineering talent pipeline.

Successful candidates should have prior experience in academic administration including a proven track record in fundraising. Candidates must also have a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment as a tenured senior professor at UC San Diego. The ideal candidate will have strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego's commitment to achieving excellence and diversity. The Dean will hold the Walter J. Zable Chair in Engineering and will be appointed to serve at 100% time.

A campus notice will follow in early January to announce the composition of the Search Advisory Committee and the name of the search firm engaged to assist with this important recruitment.
