ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (excluding UCSD Healthcare)

SUBJECT:    Emergency Response Exercise - Duck, Cover and Hold-on

On Wednesday, May 16th the campus will conduct an emergency response exercise based on the scenario of response and recovery from a catastrophic earthquake. During the exercise campus emergency responders will practice response and recovery actions to a simulated earthquake. In conjunction with the exercise, a test will be conducted of the Triton Alert emergency notification system. If you are enrolled in the Triton Alert system you will receive a test message to your phone as well as a text-message if you have a text enabled cell phone.

Now is the time to prepare for response and recovery from all-hazards. Department heads should use this opportunity to review your department emergency action plan and to discuss with your staff, students and faculty response actions to take in the event of an earthquake, which include ducking under a table or other heavy object when shaking starts, covering your head and holding onto the leg or side of a table until the shaking stops. Once the initial shaking is over, you should exit the building taking your keys, purse, etc. and do not reenter the building until told to do so by campus officials. Additional emergency response procedures can be found at: http://blink.ucsd.edu/safety/emergencies/preparedness/index.html

Please feel free to contact our office regarding campus emergency preparedness efforts and to learn steps you can take to be better prepared for any emergency.
