CAMPUS NOTICE

OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR
AUXILIARY & PLANT SERVICES

August 14, 2012

ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Power Shortage

SDG&E has notified the campus that energy demand reduction is needed between 1 and 6 p.m. today due to continued high temperatures taxing regional power reserves. Without demand reduction, SDG&E may be required to take actions to stabilize the utility grid.

Beginning at 1 p.m. today, Facilities Management will automatically reduce power demand by adjusting campus comfort cooling settings. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning in office areas will go into "unoccupied" mode and spaces will be warmer or cooler than normal, depending on the space. Temperature set points in lab areas will range between 68 and 76 degrees. Airflow will not be affected.

Should this load shedding negatively affect critical research, please call the Facilities Management Customer Relations desk at 534-2930.

Your efforts to conserve energy can make a big difference. You can help the campus by:

* Turning off non-essential lighting and plug-in items

* Closing fume hood sashes

* Unplugging laptops, allowing them to run on battery power and recharging at night

* Turning off computer monitors when you leave for the day

* If possible, avoid using cold rooms, environmental rooms, ovens, autoclaves, dishwashers, MRI magnets, electron microscopes and other energy-intensive research and computational equipment

This is a reminder to subscribe to the campuswide "Electricalstagealerts-L" ListServ if you would like to receive immediate notifications of changes in Stage Alert status. To subscribe to this ListServ please paste the following into your browser:
