SUBJECT:    Workshops - Help Guide UC San Diego Research

We are pleased to announce half-day workshops to further develop and stimulate collaborative ideas on the research themes identified through the Strategic Plan process. These workshops are open to all members of our UC San Diego community on a first-come/first-served basis.

Four Strategic Planning themes are being considered:

1. Understanding and protecting the planet
2. Understanding cultures, reducing inequities and enhancing inclusion
3. Enriching the quality of human life and health
4. Exploring the basis of human knowledge and creativity

Theme 2, which focuses on arts, humanities, policy, business, and social sciences, will also enhance each of the other themes and allow us to address the pressing issues encompassed by the other themes. In this first series of workshops Theme 2 will be integrated in all workshops to build the broadest possible connections across campus.

WORKSHOPS Tuesday, February 4, 2:30 to 6:00 pm - UNDERSTANDING AND PROTECTING THE PLANET (e.g. understand the planet, its climate and ecosystems; impact of environmental change on human health and cultures; sustainable practices; implement changes at an individual, community, and global level by integrating basic and applied sciences, social sciences and humanities)

Wednesday, February 5, 2:30 to 6:00 pm - EXPLORING THE BASIS OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE AND CREATIVITY (e.g., understand the neurological and cultural basis of cognition, communication and expression; explore human experience through the sciences, arts, humanities and social sciences; new forms of creative expression, human organizations, and frameworks for policy decisions)

Thursday, February 6, 2:30 to 6:00 pm - ENRICHING HUMAN LIFE AND HEALTH (e.g., improve health and lives of individuals; develop medical, engineering, social and educational solutions to serve society; understand human behavior, culture and health through basic, medical, and social sciences, history, and arts; evaluate diverse impacts of technology)

Many opportunities for funded research will be available around these important areas and will rely on expertise from multiple disciplines. We encourage broad participation from individuals in any discipline who can contribute to these research themes.

The workshops are an opportunity for researchers from across campus to briefly present what they are doing, the tools and resources they have to offer, as well as areas where they can benefit from collaboration.

The goal of the workshops is to foster new collaborations that can propel UC San Diego to a preeminent position as the top research university of the future. UC San Diego is counting on faculty to implement these themes so please make use of this opportunity to communicate and disseminate your ideas.

Details of these workshops, including how to register, how to submit an abstract (abstract deadline: Jan 17, 2014), and how speakers will be chosen can be found at http://researchinitiatives.ucsd.edu/.
