ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Following one year of dedicated service as UC San Diego's first Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (VC-EDI), Linda S. Greene has informed us of her intention to conclude her tenure as VC-EDI effective December 31, 2013 to return to the University of Wisconsin-Madison as the Evjue-Bascom Professor of Law.

Professor Greene joined UC San Diego as VC-EDI at a pivotal time in our university’s history, and has provided strong leadership in our efforts to create a more welcoming, diverse and inclusive campus community. Since her appointment as VC-EDI, she has worked to cultivate broad-based partnerships in support of this mission across the campus, throughout the UC system, and with community supporters. Vice Chancellor Greene has engaged a wide range of campus and community stakeholders in the development of a diversity strategic plan for UC San Diego that embraces equity, diversity and inclusion as core values, an integral component of our campuswide strategic planning effort. This work will provide an important foundational element in furthering our academic mission. Vice Chancellor Greene also worked to strengthen campus support for diverse students including program, staff and infrastructure support for the Black Resource Center and La Raza Resource Centro and has pursued broad outreach and relationship cultivation with other multicultural and religious student groups including Native American, Muslim, Jewish, LGBTQ, Asian, Pacific Islander and Filipino; she has worked to enhance efforts to support diversity in faculty hiring by promoting dialogue about best recruitment and retention practices within the divisions, clarifying the roles and responsibilities of our academic Deans and Faculty Equity Advisors; and creating channels of communication with faculty leadership and diverse faculty groups. Above all, she worked tirelessly to ensure that we embed diversity, equity, and inclusion concerns in all our UC San Diego decisions.

Please join us in thanking Vice Chancellor Linda S. Greene for her significant contributions as UC San Diego’s inaugural VC-EDI and in wishing her well on her return to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. An interim Vice Chancellor will be named shortly.
