March 4, 2013

ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    UC San Diego Observance of International Women's Day 2013

I am pleased to announce and encourage faculty, staff and students to participate in International Women's Day celebrations on March 8, 2013. International Women's Day is an opportunity to note the achievements of women, to learn about women's experiences around the world, and to draw attention to the need for further progress toward equality.

The main event will be held March 8 from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. in Price Center Ballroom A. Two speakers will be featured: Barbara Field, Senior Analyst in Business and Financial Services, Regional Director of The Op Ed Project and Mentor for The Afghan Women's Writing Project; and Dr. Anita Raj, Professor in the Division of Global Public Health and a Senior Fellow in the Center on Global Justice.

The International Women's Day celebrations will also include creative displays by students about inspiring women around the world, a spoken word performance by a student, an opportunity to write postcards to congresswomen, a Beyond the Checkbox gallery and screenings of a video of Tritons sharing diverse perspectives on the enduring relevance of celebrating International Women's Day. Details and a complete schedule of events may be viewed at: http://iwd.ucsd.edu

In recognition of this annual event, I am approving one hour of administrative leave with pay for employees to apply to their attendance at an International Women's Day event. Supervisors are asked to allow employees one hour of administrative leave with pay to attend an International Women's Day event as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.

Inquiries regarding the events may be directed to Hannah Reese, (858-246-1590 or hlreese@ucsd.edu), Chair of the Campus-wide International Women's Day Planning Committee.
