ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Appointment of Revelle College Provost

It is my pleasure to announce that Paul Yu, Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, William S.C. Chang Endowed Chair in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Initiatives, has been appointed as the next Provost of Revelle College, effective January 20, 2014.

Professor Yu received his Ph.D. from Caltech and joined the Revelle College faculty in 1983. For more than three decades, Professor Yu has been developing optoelectronic and electronic devices that enhance the performance of fiber optic networks. His works on advanced semiconductor materials and components have brought about major advancements to high data rate for digital fiber-optic transmission as well as wide bandwidth analog fiber optic transmission. In addition to his distinguished accomplishments as a scholar and researcher, Professor Yu has also made significant contributions in his service to UC San Diego. He served as Department Chair for Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2003 to 2007 following his service as Vice-Chair from 2002-2003. He served as the inaugural Faculty Equity Advisor (FEA) at UC San Diego from 2007-2012, and assisted in the formation of the FEA group.

Among the many responsibilities as Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Initiatives (AVC-RI), Professor Yu, in particular, manages the Regents Scholars Research Initiative Program which gathers faculty mentors for the coaching of freshman and transfer student Regents Scholars, and manages the Undergraduate Summer Research Exchange programs between UC San Diego and several overseas universities. His office co-oversaw the Clinton Global Initiative University Community Projects, created the Center for Undergraduate Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CURIE), and most recently launched the Undergraduate Research Portal http://urp.ucsd.edu/, where students can explore research and internship opportunities, create their own research profiles, and find answers to questions about undergraduate research at UC San Diego. He has served as a faculty adviser to several student organizations at UC San Diego: Tau Beta Pi Chapter, Eta Kappa Nu Chapter, IEEE Student Branch Chapter, Scholars Society, and SASE (The Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers). He also participated regularly in the student research reviews of the Qualcomm Institute Summer Research Symposium, Undergraduate Research Conference, ACSSA Undergraduate Research Symposium, and US Grants Research Symposium.

As a member of the joint Senate-Administration Task Force (2010), Professor Yu worked to promote the recruitment, support and retention of historically underrepresented faculty. Beginning in 2010, his office has organized the Triton Day Office of Research Affairs' Research Café to attract admitted students with diverse backgrounds. He has been very active at Revelle, serving as a guest speaker at Honors Seminars and Regent Scholars Breakfast at Triton Day, and in his work as a member of the Revelle College Executive Committee from 1995-1997 and again 2006-present.

Professor Paul Yu's administrative and academic accomplishments and his commitment to Revelle College make him exceptionally well qualified to provide leadership as Provost of Revelle College. I am delighted that he has accepted this important and challenging leadership position, and ask that you join me in offering him best wishes and support in his new role. Please also join me in thanking Professor Ann Craig for her tenure of service as Interim Provost.
