UPDATE - 10/5/2014 Robbery Near Campus; Genesee and Campus Point Drive

On October 5, 2014, the UC San Diego Police Department sent a Timely Warning regarding an armed robbery committed against a UC San Diego student that occurred near the intersection of Genesee Avenue and Campus Point Drive near the UC San Diego campus.

San Diego Police has released additional information regarding the incident. At approximately 2:15 a.m., a 22-year-old male and 20-year-old female were walking south on Genesee Avenue at Regents Road when a silver Subaru SUV stopped beside them. An occupant in the vehicle demanded the victims' backpacks and ordered them into the vehicle at gunpoint. The victims were driven to Campus Point Drive where the driver punched the male victim and then released both victims from the vehicle. The victims reported seeing and hearing a suspect firing the gun in the air.

The victims described the suspects as possibly Hispanic, both males in their 20's, 5'9"-5'11,"with medium build. One was wearing a white shirt and black bandana. The other was reported to have short hair.

General Safety Considerations

o Whenever possible, travel well-lighted, busy routes. Avoid walking or parking in shadowed areas. Have your keys in your hand as you approach your door, and remember to be alert to what and who is around you.

o Be alert and aware. Pay full attention to who is around you when you are in public.

o Report suspicious activity immediately to UCSD Police (858) 534-4357 or 9-1-1 (emergencies).

If a robbery should occur:

o If you are confronted, COOPERATE! Give the criminal what he/she asks for - wallet, keys, jewelry, credit cards and electronics. Your life is more valuable than replaceable possessions. Don't make sudden moves or try to apprehend the criminal yourself. Concentrate on remembering a description and call police immediately.

o Your safety is most important. Do what the robber says and don't stall.

o If the suspect claims he has a gun, knife, or other weapon in his pocket, believe the suspect.
