ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Departure of Vice Chancellor Steve Relyea

Steve Relyea, Vice Chancellor – Business Affairs, will depart UC San Diego to become the Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer of the 23-campus California State University System, effective May 1, 2014.

Steve has served as a passionate and dynamic leader at UC San Diego for the past 27 years. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of faculty, staff and students to help our campus become one of the world’s great research universities.

In past years, Steve coordinated UC San Diego’s sustainability initiatives, and was awarded the top individual achievement award by the California Center for Sustainable Energy. He is known as a visionary who led the modernization of our information and data network infrastructure and partnered with the faculty on numerous initiatives to increase our campus’s ability to attract research funding. He has also led many initiatives to increase the staff diversity at UC San Diego, including mentorship and staff development programs.

His leadership in performance metrics resulted in UC San Diego being the first university in the U.S. to implement the Balanced Scorecard program developed at the Harvard Business School and used by many Fortune 500 companies today. Thanks to Steve’s guidance, UC San Diego became the first university in the world to be inducted into the Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame.

Steve played a key role in many UC system-wide initiatives, including chairing a task force to change the University of California business structure, which led to a report to the Regents of the University entitled “A New Business Architecture for the University of California.” Over the past four years, he had the additional responsibility of leading UC San Diego’s fundraising and alumni efforts, resulting in a significant increase in private support for the university.

The National Association of College and University Business Officers recognized Steve’s impact on higher education by awarding their highest honor of Distinguished Business Officer of the Year.

In addition to his service to our campus, Steve has invested his time in the San Diego community as a Director of the Center City Development Corporation, on the Board of the La Jolla Playhouse and as Chairman of the Board of the Better Business Bureau of San Diego, among many other community activities.

Please join me in congratulating Steve Relyea on his new position at an all-campus farewell reception from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at the Faculty Club. If you plan to attend the reception, please RSVP to sep@ucsd.edu or (858) 534-6386.
