SUBJECT:    Organized Research Unit Name Change - New Name for CCB: Center for Circadian Biology

In the interest of maximizing opportunities for outreach, the Center for Chronobiology has requested and been granted a name change to the Center for Circadian Biology, while retaining the acronym CCB. Although "chronobiology," literally the biology of time, is more inclusive than "circadian," which focuses more specifically on a 24-h timescale, "chronobiology" is not recognized outside of the circadian biology community. As CCB worked to increase outreach and development activities, they found they were burdened by having to define their name before people realized they were interested in the work of the Center. This is a name change only.

The UCSD Center for Circadian Biology (CCB) is an alliance of scientists who investigate the internal circadian (ca. 24 hr) timing mechanisms and rhythmic processes in living organisms. The CCB fosters interaction among researchers in diverse fields to help them incorporate the study of daily rhythmicity into their biological studies, particularly as it relates to behavior, physiology, and medicine. We mentor undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students in cross-disciplinary research approaches. Outside the lab, opportunities for training include a bi-weekly, cross-disciplinary "Clockwatchers" journal club, and an annual Fall workshop to highlight the work of junior researchers. Our annual CCB symposium, From Cells to Clinic, has become a premier meeting for the circadian field and attracts researchers from around the world. Because of the importance of biological rhythms to human health, we provide and disseminate materials for education and scientific advocacy on circadian biology.
