ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Appointment of Director of the Human Research Protections Program

We are pleased to announce that Anthony E. Magit, MD, MPH, has been named Director of the Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) for UC San Diego. As director of HRPP, Dr. Magit will promote high quality clinical research across all of the schools in more than 3,500 ongoing projects. He will serve as a leader and advocate for the rights and welfare of human study volunteers and by assuring full compliance with federal, state and university regulations.

In this broad role, Dr. Magit will have overall administrative, supervisory and policy responsibility for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Embryonic Stem Cell Oversight Committee (ESCRO). To ensure regulatory and ethical conduct of clinical trials, he will develop comprehensive policies, procedures and educational programs for research members with a focus on service and education. He is the program's point of contact for interactions with federal and state agencies, the UC Office of the President and news media.

Currently a clinical professor in Pediatrics and Surgery at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Magit has been with the school since 1992. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree with distinction from Stanford University, a medical degree from the UC San Diego School of Medicine, and a Master's degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is board certified in otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) and completed a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. With more than 45 publications in peer-reviewed journals, he has been actively involved in research at UC San Diego for more than two decades and has been listed as a "Best Doctor" in San Diego every year since 2003. Dr. Magit also served as chief of staff at Rady Children's Hospital from 2010-2012 and as chair of their IRB since 2008.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Michael P. Caligiuri, PhD, who recently retired after eight years of exemplary service. Dr. Caligiuri served as the first director of the Human Research Protections Program and oversaw the formation of ESCRO. He established stringent training requirements crucial to ensuring compliance and established a single application process for both IRB- and ESCRO-related research. We thank Dr. Caligiuri for his numerous contributions and for spearheading so many improvements at HRPP while still assuring outstanding research oversight.

We are confident that Dr. Magit will continue the excellent leadership of the HRPP and will play an important role in guiding the IRB and ESCOC toward new discoveries while maintaining its strong record of compliance for the safety of study volunteers. Please join us in welcoming him in his new role.
