ACADEMIC AFFAIRS October 30, 2015
I am delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Emeritus Joel Dimsdale as the first UC San Diego Faculty Retirement Liaison, effective November 1, 2015. In that capacity, Professor Dimsdale will serve as a part-time advisor and resource for faculty who are considering retirement, as well as to faculty who have already retired. He will advocate for improvements to our local and system-wide retirement counseling programs and processes. You can call on him to facilitate interactions between faculty and relevant retirement contacts including health care facilitators, staff in Human Resources, and the Retirement Assistance Service Center (RASC). He also will be available to help faculty members planning for retirement to structure and negotiate pre- and post-retirement arrangements. Professor Dimsdale brings enormous experience to this role. As a prominent researcher, educator and clinician in the Department of Psychiatry faculty since 1985, Joel also has been singularly active in university service. Amongst his many contributions, he chaired the Health Sciences Faculty Council, Committee on Academic Personnel, Committee on Committees, the San Diego division of the Academic Senate and chaired (twice) the systemwide committee on faculty welfare. He also has served repeatedly on the systemwide taskforce on investment and retirement, as well as the systemwide health care task force. He is a former president of UC San Diego’s Emeriti Association and continues to be an active mentor to undergraduates as well as junior faculty. In recognition of his many accomplishments, he received the University of California’s Oliver Johnson award in 2014. His new position supports an important campus initiative to assist faculty in making continuing contributions in our research, teaching, and service missions post-retirement. Indeed, Professor Dimsdale’s own service to the campus exemplifies the value of emeriti involvement. As Faculty Retirement Liaison, Professor Dimsdale will be available to faculty throughout the campus by email (jdimsdale@ucsd.edu) or phone (619-543-5592). Please join me in welcoming him to this new role.
