CAMPUS NOTICE

OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR

November 13, 2015

ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

In light of recent troubling incidents at universities across the nation and within our own University of California (UC) system, we wish to reaffirm UC San Diego’s commitment to fostering and maintaining a climate free of intimidation, harassment, racism, and discrimination. A hostile campus environment negatively affects everyone, and is particularly harmful to student learning, and the wellbeing and sense of belonging of our students, staff, and faculty. We are dedicated to being a campus where the highest standards of decency and civility are practiced by all members of our community.

As members of our UC San Diego community, all students, faculty, and staff have both rights and responsibilities. These rights and responsibilities clearly articulate codes of conduct and behavior that work to reduce the likelihood of harm, enhance our daily interactions, and guide us in acting as stewards of a community in which everyone can teach, learn, and work. Toward this end, our Principles of Community, Student Conduct and Discipline, and Faculty Code of Conduct are aimed at fostering a climate of fairness, cooperation, respect, and professionalism.

Sexual harassment, racism, as well as acts of intolerance and bias have no place at UC San Diego. We are committed to responding to all reports of inappropriate conduct, harassment, and racism at all levels and in all areas of our campus. If you are subject or witness to an instance of harassment or discrimination, please immediately contact the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination (http://ophd.ucsd.edu/home.asp) at (858) 534-8298, or file a complaint online at reportbias.ucsd.edu. Complaints can be filed anonymously.

As a community, we will continue our work to create a campus where inclusion and respect are the norm. We will do this by engaging constituents from our community, committing ourselves to understanding the local and national issues by listening, and by working in partnership with the campus and greater community.

We seek your support in promoting a safe and welcoming environment for all.
