ALL ACADEMICS AT UC SAN DIEGO (INCLUDING HEALTH SCIENCES)

SUBJECT:    Data Sciences and Analytics Faculty Forums

Faculty in disciplines across the UC San Diego campus have demonstrated great interest in what is loosely dubbed "big data" and "data analytics." Advances in sensing and computing technologies are enabling the capture of data at unprecedented levels of detail, variety, spatial and temporal scale, and cost effectiveness. Data-driven modelling offers tremendous opportunities for advancing our understanding of real-world phenomena and improving our capacity to address global challenges, ranging from mapping the human biome to managing climate change.

In an effort to harness this great potential and establish UC San Diego at the frontier of research both in basic data science and its applications in the domain sciences, we have assembled an informal faculty working group to suggest ideas that should be addressed in formulating a campus wide Data Science Initiative. The Initiative will serve as a platform for connecting and supporting academics engaged in research and scholarly activities in the data sciences.

Some of the working group members and I look forward to receiving input from interested academics across all disciplines at two upcoming Data Sciences and Analytics Faculty Forums:
