ACADEMIC SENATE FACULTY

SUBJECT:    Call for Proposals - Global Seminars Summer 2018 - Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs

We are pleased to announce the call for Summer 2018 Global Seminars. The Global Seminar program offers the opportunity to teach two four-unit courses in an international location during a five-week summer session, with the benefit of full logistical support through Study Abroad UC San Diego. According to Academic Senate policy, only voting members of the UC San Diego Academic Senate are eligible for the program. Currently, only ladder rank faculty, LSOEs, and LPSOEs may participate. The Educational Policy Committee is reviewing the possibility of approving Continuing Unit 18 Lecturers to teach Global Seminars, but as of the date of this notice, these Continuing Unit 18 Lectures are not eligible to participate in the program. Interested Continuing Unit 18 Lecturers should contact Jim Galvin (x4-7857 or jgalvin@ucsd.edu) at Study Abroad UC San Diego for any updates.

Over fifty Global Seminars have been taught abroad by UC San Diego faculty since the program began in Summer 2008. Planning is well underway for up to nineteen Global Seminars across sixteen cities (Athens, Auckland, Berlin, Cape Town, Dharamsala, Dublin, Edinburgh, Granada, Madrid, Oaxaca, Paris, Quito, Rome, Seoul, Sydney, and Tokyo) during Summer 2017, and Study Abroad UC San Diego hopes to offer another compelling selection of seminars during Summer 2018.

Together with Professor John Haviland, Faculty Director of Study Abroad UC San Diego, and Dr. Kirk Simmons, Dean of the International Center, we invite you to submit a proposal to lead a Global Seminar in Summer 2018.

A committee will review proposals with the aim of offering students a range of destinations, disciplines, and costs. Proposals must be submitted by April 15, 2017 for consideration for the Summer 2018 program.

Information sessions about these faculty-led Global Seminars will be held on Wednesday, February 22 from 4:00-5:00 PM and Thursday, February 23 from 4:00-5:00 PM in the Study Abroad UC San Diego office, located in Building 409 (on Matthews Quad, south of the Price Center), Suite 120 in the conference room adjacent to the reception desk. Speakers will include faculty who previously taught Global Seminars and Jim Galvin, Director of Opportunities Abroad and Faculty-Led Programs.
