ALL ACADEMICS AT UC SAN DIEGO (including Health Sciences)

SUBJECT:    International Institute – Inaugural Event and Call for Faculty Groups

We are happy to announce the formation of UC San Diego’s campus-wide International Institute, which will be administered by the Division of Social Sciences.

Funded by the Chancellor, the International Institute will supplement and support scholarship and teaching on international issues at UC San Diego. We hope to enrich the university’s intellectual community by supporting and producing research and policy ideas on international issues from across disciplines. To foster new collaborations, we will provide funding to cross-divisional faculty groups and collaboratories, and convene an annual conference dedicated to one of the university’s four strategic research themes across regions of the world. We will also provide fellowships for faculty and graduate student research.

The institute is the result of a faculty-led initiative and will develop in collaboration with engaged faculty. We invite you to bring your expertise and research concerns into dialogue with the institute, by forming a faculty group based on either a regional or thematic focus.

Our call for 2017-18 faculty groups and collaboratories can be found at http://internationalinstit ute.ucsd.edu. Selected groups – of at least five members from at least two different divisions – will receive from $3,000 to $5,000 for speakers, workshops, and conferences. Applications will be due on March 30. Informational sessions will be held on Thursday, March 2, from 4 to 5 p.m., and Monday, March 6, from 11 a.m. to noon. Both will take place in Sequoyah Hall, Rm. 103.

We also invite you to the institute’s inaugural event: UC Berkeley political theorist Wendy Brown will discuss the rise of authoritarianism on March 14, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Cross-Cultural Center.
