SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT – Mid-Coast Light Rail Transit Project: Warren Field Light Removal

Project Description/Location:

Construction of the Mid-Coast Light Rail Project began in September of 2016 and will continue through 2021. Once completed, the Trolley extension will provide an effective campus commuting alternative, reduce roadway congestion, improve public transit services, and better connect the Mid-Coast Corridor with areas of San Diego County served by existing Trolley routes.

As part of the make-ready work for the Light Rail, the project team continues to perform early construction activities, one of which includes temporarily removing the light poles on the north side of Warren Field to make way for the elevated guideway. To keep Warren Field illuminated at night, the project team will be using the existing light reflectors and installing them on temporary wooden poles adjacent to the reconfigured portion of Warren Field. This work will take place over spring break beginning March 27 and will take approximately two days to execute.

Immediate Parking Lot, Street Traffic, and Pedestrian Impacts:

To remove the light poles, a crane will be set up within the construction yard to lift the poles and lay them in the yard. The sidewalk on the south side of Voigt Drive will be closed for the entire duration of the work and all pedestrian traffic will be directed onto the north side of the street. Voigt Drive will be intermittently closed when the crane begins removing each pole from the ground. Flaggers will stop all vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Voigt Drive until the pole is safely removed. Traffic will resume after each crane pick. There will be a total of four (4) temporary closures and they will last approximately 15 minutes each. Pedestrian and vehicle detour routes are provided as shown on the graphic in the link below. Signage will be posted to alert drivers of the impact and direct drivers to the available detours.
