ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Call for Nominations and Applications – Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences

An international search for a new Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences is now commencing, and we are pleased to invite applications and nominations for this position.

The Dean provides intellectual and administrative leadership to the Division of Biological Sciences and promotes excellence in all aspects of the Division's research, teaching, and service missions. The Dean is also responsible for cultivating partnerships with other campus divisions, furthering the development of new multidisciplinary programs and initiatives, and leading UC San Diego’s participation in competitions for large-scale, collaborative interdisciplinary research opportunities. Successful candidates should have prior experience in academic administration, and a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment as a tenured senior professor at UC San Diego. They should also have a proven record in fundraising and financial management. The ideal candidate will have strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity. Successful candidates will also have a demonstrated commitment to and experience leading programs and initiatives that improve undergraduate education and the overall student experience.

The membership of the Search Advisory Committee, which will be chaired by Professor Shirley Meng (NanoEngineering), is given below. The Search Advisory Committee is charged with conducting an international search, identifying and presenting suitable candidates for interview by the Committee, and helping to develop an unranked short list of diverse, qualified candidates who will be invited to visit the campus. We will solicit and consider input from everyone who participates in the selection process and will make the final determination about the successful candidate.

The Search Advisory Committee will begin reviewing candidates in April and will continue until the position is filled. For full consideration, applicant materials should be received by March 23, 2018. The Witt-Kieffer search firm has been engaged to assist with this important recruitment, and all candidate materials will be sent directly to the firm.

Candidates should provide a curriculum vitae, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the Leadership Profile, a diversity statement (see http://facultydiversity.ucsd.edu/recruitment/index.html for more information), and the names and contact information of five references. References will not be contacted without prior knowledge and approval of candidates. These materials should be sent electronically via e-mail to UC San Diego’s consultants Suzanne Teer and Brian Bloomfield at: UCSanDiegoBioSci@wittkieffer.com.
